Peacock Bass Fishing In Hawaii

Wahiawa in central Oahu is the place to go peacock bass fishing. The Wahiawa Reservoir, also known as Lake Wilson is popular with fishermen of all ages and skill levels. Lake Wilson has a surface area of around 350 acres, a shoreline of around 20 miles and a maximum capacity of approximately 3 billion gallons.

Lake Wilson has a wealth of good fishing, having been stocked with over 17 species of fish, including peacock bass. It’s open to the public throughout the year. The best time of year to go peacock bass fishing in Hawaii is during the warmer months, since the peacock bass are more active then. April-October are good for peacock bass fishing.

What you need to go peacock bass fishing

If you’re planning to go peacock bass fishing at Lake Wilson, here’s what you need:

  • A freshwater fishing license. This costs $5 for residents or members of the military, and $10 for non-residents. You can get this online at Walmarts in Mililani.
  • An entry permit. This is free.
  • A USCG lifejacket
  • Make sure to check the allowed minimum sizes and weights for fish as well as the minimum requirements on your catch.

It’s recommended that you bring sunscreen and sunglasses. Get a good mosquito repellent, since Lake Wilson has a lot of these. Do also remember to bring your camera to take pictures of your catch.

Since the banks of Lake Wilson are steep, most people fish from boats. You can hire a kayak and bring it up to the lake. If you prefer, you can book a bass fishing trip. Half day, full day and hourly fishing trips are available. These include bait and fishing tackle; however you can take your own if you prefer.

Hourly fishing rates are $65 for two people per boat.

Half day trips (morning and afternoon, can cost around $250 for two people per boat. These are 4 hour trips.

You can book a full day fishing trip for $400. This is a 7 hour trip, and covers two people per boat.

Lake Wilson fish species

Lake Wilson has a superb variety of fish. Bluegill bass, snakehead, also called pongee, largemouth bass, channel catfish, oscar fish and tilapia can be found here. Peacock bass or tucunare, however, is the most popular species with fishermen at Lake Wilson. This species is known by the distinctive spot on its tail.
