What are the best places to go snorkeling in Hawaii?

Maui, Oahu and the Big Island are the places to go if you’re snorkeling in Hawaii.

Maui has the best beaches to go snorkeling Take your pick from:

  • Honolua Bay, Maui. Here you will find a huge variety of marine life.
  • Kapalua Bay. This bay on Maui features a c-shaped cove that’s peaceful, sheltered, and serene.
  • Turtle Town Maui and Maluaka Beach on the southern side, also a snorkeler’s paradise.
  • Molokini where you’ll be snorkeling in crystal clear waters.
  • Ahihi Kinau Reserve which is another wonderful place to explore marine life.

Maui has been voted the best island in the world with good reason. It has around 120 miles of coastline and 30 miles of beaches; the largest mileage of swimmable beaches in Hawaii, and a temperature between 75-85 degrees F. Around 3,000 of the world’s total population of 7,000-8,000 humpback whales winter in the waters off Maui.

What is Hawaii’s marine life and reef structure like?

The fringing reefs in Hawaii are made of hard corals. You will be snorkeling in waters where there are an amazing variety of fish, including the occasional turtle and dolphin; amid beautiful coral. Some of the best snorkeling areas are at a depth of just 15 ft.

The west or leeward side of the islands are better for snorkeling, since they are drier and the water is clearer. Of course there are exceptions!

What’s the best time of year to go snorkeling in Hawaii?

Hawaii has pleasant tropical temperatures all the year round. However the recommended time of year to go snorkeling in Hawaii is during the summer months. This is because the water temperatures in winter are around 74 degrees F. At the end of summer it’s around d 82 degrees F. If you’re going snorkeling in the winter months wear a thin neoprene wetsuit top. In late summer a rash guard on top is fine.

Bear in mind that June to November is hurricane season. This means that you can have tropical storms, depressions and hurricanes affecting this region.

Since Hawaii is a popular destination do remember that during the season, that’s mid-December to mid-April and mid June-Mid August, will increase the cost of your trip overall. In addition there will be a large number of people holidaying in Hawaii.
